The Nursery in 2023
After we built the Nursery last fall, we began to think of it more as a living space than a work space. Like the inside of our house it will, of course, have plants and be used as staging or overflow from other spaces as needed.
We still needed a Nursery. Fortunately, we had a space that would meet our needs for this year. We put hooks in the ceiling to move the big spider plants out of the work space. We moved shelving from the main Greenhouse to the new Nursery. We ran lights to each of the shelves. There was just enough room left for two folding tables along one wall where Michelle could work.
A couple weeks after the new Nursery was ready, we prepared the coconut husk and perlite potting mixture that we used.
Michelle made trays ready and added seeds.
Some seeds were new this year, and some seeds were from her personal collection, harvested from plants she enjoyed in years gone by.
And before you know it…
In less than a week, Michelle spied the tiniest of sprouts in the trays. I think sometimes she hears them as well. It seems that once the first one ventures out, the rest of them find the courage to follow together.
The season begins!
Michelle broadcasts seeds in the trays to begin the season. In a few weeks she will transfer them to 4” pots. There will be 18 of the 4” pots in each tray. The Nursery shelves have only enough space for a little over 2,300 4” pots. So the Sun Room will house any extras for a little while.
